My name is Martha and I'm Cardiff/London based. Fundivism is a place to share my fundraising and activism against sexual violence. I'm an aspiring writer, a poet and a part-time MSc Gender, Media and Culture student at the London School of Economics.
During my undergraduate degree and much like countless other young women, I was raped and sexually assaulted. I started getting involved in fundraising and activism and its been a huge part of my healing journey. For the rest of my time at university, I was a member and then President of the Domestic Violence Awareness Society. I organised awareness and wellness events around campus and fundraised for local DV charities. I also joined some girl-only spaces, with Full Circle Education and Plan International, to learn and talk about issues facing girls in Wales.
After I graduated, I was at a loss and felt powerless to prevent sexual violence on my own. I was inspired by a fellow fundraiser to organise a charity ball and the first one took place in February 2019. After such a successful event, many guests asked me to host another event the following year and straight away I started brainstorming ideas. That's when I approached my part-time independent film-maker father and asked for his help to create an awareness short-film. As preparations went underway to turn this around in less than a year, we decided there were other films we wanted to showcase as we felt they complimented one another to raise awareness about the number of complex issues at play. The event then came together as a mini-film festival and charity ball - Festi-Ball (as you might be able to tell, I love making new word combos!)
I've raised over £4,500 for Rape Crisis England and Wales over the last two years and whilst I won't be planning a large-scale event until I have graduated from my Master's degree, I will continue with my efforts.
